Yves Saint Laurent will be in cinemas on 21 March

Yves Saint Laurent film a biography of a man and a fashion designer

Yves Saint Laurent (2014) stars Pierre Niney of the Comédie-Franaise as YSL.

Yves Saint Laurent the film is focussed on Yves Saint Laurent the man primarily, and Yves Saint Laurent the fashion house a close second. The film provides viewers with a glimpse into the young designer´s ingenuity and creativity, recreating a moment where Saint Laurent modestly – but expertly – shows Dior how to tighten the waist of a dress without taking it in.

This film feels caught between two aims – a biography of Saint Laurent the man, and charting the key moments of Saint Laurent the fashion designer.

Actor turned director Jalil Lespert´s latest feature, Yves Saint Laurent (2014), sets about the ambitious task of condensing into an 106-minute film the life and work of one of fashion´s most celebrated icons. The result is a stylish melodrama, enriched by touching performances from Comédie-Française actors Pierre Niney and Gaullaume Gallienne. Opening in Oran, French Algeria, in 1957, we meet the young Yves (Niney) residing at his parents´ villa before he has to return to Paris. From the opening scene, we quickly understand the commitment that Niney brings to the role, embodying the fragility and anxiety that plagued Saint Laurent throughout his rich life.

Yves Saint Laurent, directed by Jalil Lespert, acts as the iconic designer´s biography. And, we have the first peek at the official movie poster, which features a watercolor image of a young Saint Laurent (played by Pierre Niney).

The film takes us from his days at Dior in his 20s to the start of his own label — and the rest is history, to say the least. Of course, his relationship with Pierre Bergé (Guillaume Gallienne) is a big part of the flick as well. After all, this is not just a fashion biography — it´s a love story, too. The film debuts on this year in select theaters.
