Spanish social network Tuenti turns into a mobile virtual network operator

Spanish social network Tuenti has launched a new version of its native app for iOS users, which for the first time includes free VoIP calls (AppFuel)

Tuenti, the mostly Latin-country-oriented mobile social network has been gradually iterating on its product to free voice calling service for its iPhone app. The move follows a similar update for its Android app.

Spanish social network Tuenti has launched a new version of its native app for iOS users, which for the first time includes free VoIP calls. The option for making voice over IP calls appears on the top right corner of the chat screen when users chat with a friend or contact, and the call history with each person is also displayed.

The new functionality will be available for iPhone devices (from the 3GS version and newer and with the iOS 6 operating system or higher), and users must update to the latest version of the Tuenti app for iOS (version 4.3) in order to enjoy all the new multi-platform features.

Tuenti also has a hybrid model in that it also runs its own mobile virtual network operator, meaning that Tuenti Móvil customers are able to make these calls using the Tuenti app without consuming cell phone data.

Its ‘Zerolímites’ package means customers can consumer data from their Bundle even if they have no credit remaining. So when your friend on Tuenti Móvil runs out of credit, they can still chat with you though the app. That just incentivises more people to sign up to Tuenti Móvil, knowing that their temporary cash flow issue won’t be a problem. Handy for cash-strapped teenager in Latin countries.

Spanish social network Tuenti announced  this month that the customer base of its Tuenti Movil MVNO has surpassed the 200,000 milestone just over two years after launching in February 2012. The company rewarded its 200,000th customer, a Barcelona resident who ported his number from another operator, with two years of its EUR 10.75 tariff.

Tuenti, which is now 100 percent owned by Telefonica
, has redefined itself in recent months as a "cloud phone company" and the first "telco 2.0" committed to developing unique services in the cloud. Tuenti Movil´s services include ´Zerolimits´, which allows users to make VoIP calls, chat and share files free of charge via the social network app. Tuenti´s SIM cards are available via 2,000 points of sale located on the Spanish mainland and in the Canary and Balearic islands and its prepaid cards can be topped up in more than 80,000 authorised establishments.
