During the UK Universities Week

Science Minister David Willetts announces 60 million euros investment in biomedical research


In the UK Universities Week, which runs from 9-15 June, UK´s Minister of State for Universities and Science David Willetts has announced a 60 million euros funding in biomedical research.

The  60 million euros (£48 million) funding in biomedical research provided by Biomedical Catalyst project will give grants to more than 70 research projects, focused in investigating diseases such as Alzheimer or Parkinson.
 
Mr Willetts,UK´s Minister for Universities and Science, announced the funding during a speech at the Universities Week at Bournemouth University. 
 
Biomedical Catalyst is an integrated translational funding programme to supports innovative ideas that provide a positive healthcare and economic impact. The will be founded by the Medical Research Council and the Technology Strategy Board.
 
Sir John Savill, chief executive of the Medical Research Council, said: “Since its inception, the Biomedical Catalyst has awarded over £170m to UK scientists and businesses. This has been matched by an additional £97m of private investment.The academic-industry partnerships forged through this investment will help to improve lives by delivering the next generation of innovative therapies and will help drive the UK economy.”
