Dating apps change the way people fall in love

Dating apps

Technology is changing the way millenials find love and dating apps-the newest form of tech-courtship has found resonance among many. But, only time will tell if dating apps will make an impact in social structure. For all its entertainment value and booty call potential, Tinder and other dating apps have become the new way of finding love.

Online dating is all the more attractive in a city where friendship groups are tight, relationships at work can be perilous, and where dalliances in bars are viewed with suspicion or quickly forgotten.

About 31 per cent of people now meet their last love interest online, anthropologist told CNN. A recent Pew report on Online Dating & Relationships looked at the impact of social networking and mobile dating on singles looking for love.

Pew reported that 7 percent of mobile phone apps users (representing 3 percent of all adults) say that they have used a dating app on their cell phone. The convenience of dating from your mobile phone will not only results in meeting more people, but also speeds up the process from initial contact to meeting in person.

Mobile dating has truly become a social dating experience, with many apps considered social dating, social networking and social discovery experiences.

Tinder  app was set up in 2012 in the US. Globally, users have swiped through 1.6 billion profiles and has been downloaded over 50 million times. Following Tinder’s popularity a host of homegrown apps have flooded the market and they claim to fill a key gap that many have identified with Tinder of being a platform that helps people who want a relationship. For younger , Tinder has become a way of life, or at least a crutch to get through lean times in love.

A survey done by Android security scanner Appvigil of popular dating applications, including Tinder, Grindr, TrulyMadly, MeetMe and Desicrush, has revealed that these platforms have vulnerabilities and can be hacked into.

The report, which was exclusively done for BusinessLine, mentions that the vulnerabilities offer an easy path for hackers to tread.

These include possibility of malware infection, bugs and multiple loopholes that allow hackers to snoop into personal chats. This could also lead to instances where a user liking a profile picture could be hijacked to like another person’s picture. Together, these apps have about 51 million users.

With intimacy being a prerequisite for most communication here, users are fast catching on to a somewhat obvious truth -the Internet can be a terrible guardian of your best kept secrets. Sudden exposure, though, might still not be an adequate deterrent.

When single, it is comforting to hear that all one has to do is swipe right to find true love. We´ve heard the testimonials and have received the encouragement -`Get wooing to find your special someone!´ Sometimes that´s the only push you need. The temptation to surrender is strong, but before you do, here are seven perils you must wise up to.
