Clothing is not just about ornamentation. It’s necessary for our health, hygiene and, in some cases for our safety. Many professions and pursuits rely on protective clothing. For example, the French high-tech start-upstart-up IN&MOTION has developed wearable ski racing air bags that combine sensor and wireless communication technology to detect unavoidable falls and inflate. Thanks to EU-funding, they were also able to carry out market analysis that enabled them to identify a potential new sector for their product: motorcycling.

Research results are also making the industry more efficient and cost-effective: For example, the TAILORFIT project is developing cost-efficient software and automated material cutting technologies that will enable fashion houses to offer personalised, made to measure menswear quickly and at competitive prices.

This week’s edition of CORDIS Express takes a look at these and other research results where fashion and tech collide.
