Berlin and Hamburg interested in bidding for 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Germany´s two biggest cities Berlin and Hamburg will go head to head next month as both cities present their concepts for the 2024 summer Olympic Games.Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit confirmed on Tuesday that the capital city is seeking to become the German applicant to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the bid concept to be revealed on Monday (September 1).

Berlin is one of two German cities, along with Hamburg, interested in bidding for what if successful would be the first Games on German soil since Munich 1972, and the first in the capital city since 1936 during the Nazi-ruled period of the Third Reich.

Speaking following a senate meeting today in which the Mayor also announced he would be stepping down following 13 years in office on December 11, Wowereit confirmed a referendum would be held to ascertain public opinion over whether to bid.

The announcement comes five days before the August 31 deadline set by the DOSB for contenders to submit their responses to a questionnaire about their bid.

The National Olympic Committee will then decide which, if either, of the two to put forward, and it appears likely a final decision will not be announced until next year, before the opening of the official International Olympic Committee (IOC) bid process next autumn. The committee will decide on Dec. 6 whether to bid for the Olympics. The Germans also have to decide whether they will bid for the 2024 Games or the 2028 Olympics.

Berlin´s announcement comes at a fascinating time for an Olympic Movement in the midst of the Olympic Agenda 2020 reform process, particularly due to the widespread apathy surrounding Olympic bids from many European countries.

The last time Berlin attempted to bid for an Olympic Games, for the 2000 edition eventually awarded to Sydney, there were a series of protests against the campaign. No other cities have officially announced a bid yet but potential candidates include the US cities of Los Angeles and Boston, as well as Paris and Istanbul.

Having experienced a lack of public support for some of the 2022 winter Games candidates, the International Olympic Committee is keen to ensure future candidates have the utmost support of their local citizens, in order to maintain enthusiasm and a smooth operation of the world´s biggest multi-sports event. The next summer Olympic Games will be held in Brazil´s Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and in Tokyo in 2020.
